This outlines a clear theme for the choice: correct consistency, appropriate morsel size and rig that keeps the bait until reaching the work area.

The bait bread should be shaped without becoming a hard shapeless ball. Separate a small piece, press only the area around the hook and leave the outside lighter. Thus, the crumb retains volume and natural appearance. If a stronger cast is to come, make a test near the shore: See if the bait stays in place and if the hook tip is not completely closed.

The size of the morsel is consistent with the hook, current and expected fish. Too large a piece can hide the tip and make detection difficult, and too little to release as it floods.
