Start with the bait actually mounted. If it obscures the top or fills the curve, switch to another proportion; if it stays away and the hair is twisted around the hook, adjust its length. The larger hook is not automatically more secure, and the finer one is not necessarily less noticeable in a finished mount.

The ear must accept the knot cleanly, without the fishing line breaking or remaining pressed. After tying, pull the cause gradually and check if the hair comes out in the desired direction. If you use a non-contiguous pattern, do not compensate with excessive detection; smooth load and constant line give more predictable control.

The bottom also changes the decision. After contact with a hard area, inspect the tip, and in soft bottom, monitor if the bait and the leader do not gather directly next to the feeder.
