Wafters, or balanced baits, have been used by trophy anglers for many years. Sonubaits first introduced Wafters in 2014 in smaller sizes for method feeder anglers. Since then, flavours and colours have changed, but the principle remains the same.
A wafter should float, but sink slowly under the weight of the hook. This balances the bait so only the bait lifts from the bottom without lifting the hook. Because it is suspended in the water, when fish feed it rises into the fish's mouth faster than a standard bottom bait, resulting in more hooked fish.
If it sinks without the weight of the hook, it is not a wafter; it is a normal sinking bait and will not work as intended. Always check your wafter in a tub of water before using it.
Band'um Wafters are baits with buoyancy between a bottom bait and a floating bait, designed to counteract the weight of the hook.
