The #5 swimstring is practical for very superficial and shallow presentations. Sinking variants have another role and are chosen by sinking speed and working layer when this is explicitly indicated. Don't take color as a measure of buoyancy. Read the full label on the package and do not carry a feature from one profile to another.
The reel should accommodate the cord and enough backing without pressing against the frame. Roll up evenly and check the connections between backing, cord and leader. If the line is piling up on one side, adjust the coiling before the outing. Memory and twisting are reduced by properly unscrewing from the original spool, rather than by pulling random loops on the side.
Clean the cord with appropriate means according to the material and inspect it carefully for cracking, rubbing and damaged areas. Do not leave it long wet and tight on a small diameter. Before fishing, stretch the workpiece and check the transition to the leader. Record the class, buoyancy and profile of each line so you don't rely on color or old memory when changing spools. Also note the winding direction.
