Choose length and mass according to the size of the natural prey, current and desired depth. Check if the body is standing; the crooked rigging changes the movement and causes the lure to deviate.
In clear water, start with a close-to-local fish profile and controlled speed. In a muddy, windy or dim light, a clearer silhouette, vibration and rattling can facilitate detection, but are not a universal solution. Alternate by only one parameter: first depth, then pace, then color. That way you know what change brings a reaction, instead of changing the whole rig after each empty pass.
Before fishing, inspect the rings, hooks and the connection to the line. A blunt or deformed hook also compromises the properly led lure. When working around stones, vegetation or salt water, consider the leader's risk of rubbing and target fish without making it unnecessarily hard.
